I’m still on a kick of making new designs based on my tiny sketchbook. In case you missed it, last week I shared the story behind my design “Sunset Squirrel” and the week before that I shared a design called “I Want to Believe.”
As you may recall from my sketchbook tour, I did a couple sketches with pine tree silhouettes, like this one:
I turned this one into an art print, by taking a photo of the page and editing the image, and adding some hand lettering. I shared a digital download of this print with paid subscribers in this post.
The silhouette of pine trees was an effective way to frame the bottom of the image so I decided to experiment with other shapes. Eventually, this cat showed up:
I liked the idea of the cat “peeking” onto the page, but after I finished it, I wished I hadn’t gone to the edge of the paper and used a full cat head shape instead. If the image were contained in a complete shape, I thought it might make a fun t-shirt design. So I experimented with the design digitally.
I tried a few different things with the sky and ended up using a textured black to really make the ears pop. Now it has a more spooky vibe! The birds show up more prominently on this version as well. It gives me the feeling that a cat is watching from somewhere, getting ready to pounce!
Here’s a video of the process:
“Adventure Cat” is now available on T-Shirts, Tote Bags, and Mugs in my shop!
