I’ve been thinking about impermanence a lot lately… stricken by a desire to hold onto things I can’t hold onto. I have a poetry comic to offer you today called Ephemeral about exactly that.
I worked on this one backward compared to my usual process — art first, words second. Or maybe I should consider this one more of a collage… a recombination of elements vs. a purposeful process. Sometimes, I have an idea and I chase it. Other times, ideas chase me. Either way, the feeling of discovery is my favorite part about making art.
I had no plan for these watercolor panels. I was just experimenting with my new watercolor set with a friend! As a result, I don’t have any process photos aside from the pre-tape removal one above. This one was pure play.
This week some words stumbled out of me one night while I couldn’t sleep. I typed them into my phone hoping to quiet down my night brain. In the light of day, some of the words weren’t bad. I moved them around on the page until they captured a feeling. I scanned in my watercolor panels and added words digitally. The finished piece looks like this:
Stardust update: Stardust is scheduled to arrive at my doorstep TOMORROW! I’m so excited to start shipping out orders! Next week I’ll share photos of the real printed piece.
