Last week I wrote about Research and Reference Fails and shared a few examples of my not-so-seamless process for creating comics. I don’t usually go to the extreme of getting poison ivy, but I do learn something from each new thing I make! (And for those who have asked, the poison ivy reaction on my ankle has gotten significantly better—thank you!)
In addition to learning what poison ivy looks like, I have learned about the nuances between poplar and basswood leaves!
It turns out basswood leaves are heart shaped, while cottonwood/poplar leaves are “nearly triangular to heart shaped.” Sooooo…. similar, but different.
Fun fact: cottonwood and poplar are two names for the same kind of tree! The tree in my yard is specifically an “Eastern Cottonwood,” which is also called the “Carolina Poplar” and “Southern Cottonwood.” All three names are misleading since they grow all the way north into Wisconsin!
Anyway, here is the finished comic with the correct leaves!
Thanks for reading!
Thanks for being here! Time and attention are among our most precious resources, and I truly appreciate you making space for my work.
To make up for last week, I’m sharing two versions of this comic—one in color and one in black and white—with paid subscribers!
