Happy Halloween Eve! Nothing says Halloween like creepy crawlies! Actually, that’s not true. Lots of things say Halloween like creepy crawlies—skulls, ghosts, excessive amounts of candy, witchy things like brooms, cauldrons, black cats… I could go on. But all I have to offer you today is a light-hearted and lightly informative zine about stink bugs: six-legged, bumbly hard-shelled insects that, to my delight, don’t move all that fast.
There has been an influx of stink bugs sunning themselves near the south-facing door of my house lately. I’m suspicious that the warm fall weather we’ve been enjoying in southeastern Wisconsin is causing this proliferation of happy little hard-shelled creatures. They seem to be thoroughly enjoying themselves in what I’m now referring to as “Stink Bug Paradise” and occasionally they boldly let themselves right inside my house as well.
Fortunately, ever since I made this zine, stink bugs no longer freak me out. I kept seeing them over and over again and curiosity got the best of me. Once I started researching the bug, I had to write a zine about it. I think there’s something about curiosity that helps dissipate fear and disgust. So if stink bugs creep you out, you might find that learning more about them makes them seem less creepy.
If you would like a printed copy of this zine for yourself or a wacky friend, I have them available in my store! Zines like this make a fun alternative to traditional cards, or as a unique add-in when you’re sending snail mail.
