I have had this poem brewing for several weeks now. I didn’t know it was about the concept of “enough” at first. I was trying to capture this dichotomy I’ve felt lately of simultaneously decaying and becoming something new. It started in an “I” voice and turned into a “we” and eventually permission to let whatever transpired during the day be enough — whether it was all that you hoped or planned or strived for… or not.
Enough
We are made of stardust
and rotting leaves
fertile soil
and toxic habitsdeep roots
and daring dreams
good intentions
and a million mistakesfailing, flailing
somehow drowning and waving
let’s instead
give into restash to ash
dust to dust
let’s let today
be enough
The concept of enough is complicated. The pendulum of too much and too little in my life seems to swing back and forth on a daily basis. I struggle to realize that I have enough of anything until I have too much or too little.
While recently moving, “I have too much stuff!”
Looking at my packed calendar, “I have too much to do!”
While applying for anything, “My work isn’t good enough!”
At the end of the day, “I didn’t get enough done!”
The list goes on, as I’m sure it does for you too. I’m not any closer to really understanding what “enough” is across all the facets of my life, but I think it might help if I started thinking less about “enough” in terms of consumables and completed tasks, and more in terms of letting go and being content with what is.
Today, I invite you to consider all the areas in which you already have enough and savor them for what they are. And for the areas where you feel there is too little or too much, remember that everything is temporary. The pendulum will continue to swing. Whatever happened today is enough.
