I have a new poetry comic to share! Originally, I illustrated “Enough” in my sketchbook and shared it in this post. When I decided to create a zine of illustrated poems, “Enough” felt like the perfect fit for the collection, which is now titled “Stardust.” (Cover reveal coming soon!)
My sketches for this comic went through several different iterations. At first there was a fox because foxes are majestic and an excellent complement to all the leaves I had planned. But I switched to a bunny because it visually and thematically provided more contrast. (Bunnies make me think spring and lush green grass!) I also liked that a bunny is much more vulnerable than a fox. When I find myself feeling out of place, vulnerable, and generally overextended, the words in this poem help me get to a better mental state.
Maybe it sounds strange, but lately when I’ve been walking in the woods I’ve had this deep desire to be absorbed by the forest floor — both literally and figuratively. Please tuck me into a bed of leaves and let me become one with the the dirt and leaves and roots and trees.
Walking through the trees makes me feel more connected to my surroundings. I have to be more vigilant with where and how I walk across the uneven ground — over roots and rocks — while navigating the reaching branches along the path. It’s fully immersive in a way that brings me out of my head and into the present. When I walk in the woods, I can’t help but feel more connected to my surroundings. Somehow, even when I’m walking by myself, this connection to nature makes me feel less separated and alone.
I think the central cause of much of our human angst and suffering comes from a feeling of separation. Whether it’s feeling separated from who or what we really care about. Who we really love. What we really want. Where we really want to be. Who we really want to be. It all stems from the pain of separation. The remedy is seeking and surrendering to connection. That’s what today’s art print for paid subscribers is all about.
