I have been working in black and white a lot lately. Which might not be obvious since my last colorful post about Sunshine-Friendly Materials! But a bigger project I’m working on right now (that might be a part of an even bigger project…?!) is a new 16- to 20-page zine with grayscale interiors and color covers. I wanted the simplicity and stark look of black and white for this particular zine. And as an added bonus, working in grayscale has been an excellent exercise for me in maximizing my use of value and contrast! I’ll dive into more details in the next couple weeks and start taking you on the journey of making this new zine!
In the meantime, I want to show you this little four-panel comic I made called “A Walk in the Rain.” I wrote the words after I got back from a rainy walk that was only slightly unpleasant and somehow a little enjoyable?! I started it in the same black and white style that I’m using for my in-progress zine:
After I had all four panels with the grayscale treatment I liked it… but I also felt like it was missing something. So I started playing with the color gradient tool in Procreate that allows me to map a new color palette to an existing piece of art based on values. Basically, you pick 3-5 colors and the gradient map tool assigns them based on the light or dark value of the colors you already have on that layer. Like this:
I had so much fun with this! I went a little crazy making different color combos and eventually landed on two top favorites. See below for both versions and please vote on your favorite in the poll!

And actually, I want to know what you think about the original grayscale version too! Check out 4-panel layouts of all three color palettes and vote for your favorite below!

Thanks for being here! It truly means the world to me to connect with you every week. In case you missed it, last week I talked about spending more time outside and experimenting with new colorful art supplies. You can check that out here.
